إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

1. Indeed, I revealed the Qur’ān at once to the heaven nearest to the world, just as I started off revealing it to Muhammad (peace be upon him), on the Night of Decree in the month of Ramadan.

2. O Prophet! Do you know what goodness and blessings lie in this night?

لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ

3. This night is a night of great goodness; it is better than a thousand months for the one who stands in prayer during it, whilst having faith and hoping for reward.

the Night of Ordainment is? — [intended] to emphasise its great Status and to provoke marvel at it. [97:3] The Night of Ordainment is better than a thousand months, in which there is no Night of Or¬ dainment, for a righteous deed on that Night is better than one [performed] for a thousand months without it. [97:4] The angels and the Spirit, namely, Gabriel, descend ( tanazzalu: one of the two original ta letters [of tatanazzalu ] has been omitted) in it, on that night, by the leave of their Lord, by His command, with every command, that God has decreed from that year to the following one…

4. The angels and Gabriel (peace be upon him) descend during it with the permission of their Lord (may He be glorified), bringing every matter Allah has decreed to happen that year, whether it be sustenance, deaths, births or anything else He has decreed.

سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ

5. This whole blessed night contains goodness, right from its beginning until its end, with the breaking of dawn.

t God has decreed from that year to the following one (min is causative functioning as bi, ‘with’). [97:5] It is peaceful (salamun hiya: a predicate preceding the subject) until the rising of the dawn (read matla or math 1 ), until the time it rises: it is peaceful because of the numerous salutations [of peace] ( salam ) Spoken in it by the angels, who, every time they come across a believing man or believing wom¬ an, bid him peace.
