1. O Messenger! Indeed, I have granted you abundant goodness, from which is the river of Kawthar in Paradise.

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

al-Maḥallī & al-Suyūṭī · 864–911 AH / 1459–1505 CE

. Meccan or Medinese, consisting of 3 verses. In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful: [108:1] We have assuredly given you, O Muhammad (s), Abundance — [the name of] a river in Para¬ dise and his [the Prophets] pool around which his community shall gather; al-kawthar also means the abundant good [that has been given to the Prophet], such as prophethood, the Qur’an, intercession, and the like. [108:2] So pray to your Lord, the prayer of the Festival of Immolation (‘id al-nahr), and sacrifice, your offering.

2. So be grateful to Allah for this blessing, by performing prayer for Him alone and offering sacrifice for Him, as opposed to the offerings of sacrifice the idolaters do for their idols.

3. Indeed, your hater is cut off from every goodness, and will be forgotten. If remembered, he will be remembered negatively.

to your Lord, the prayer of the Festival of Immolation (‘id al-nahr), and sacrifice, your offering. [108:3] Indeed it is your antagonist, your hater, who is the severed one, refraining from all [acfts of] good, or the one whose line of offspring will be severed [by his not having any]: this was revealed regard¬ ing al-'AsI b.…
